The mayor of the City of Mendoza, Ulpiano Suarez, confirmed that he will run for the Governorship in 2027. The announcement was made during an event organized by the group La Juan Bautista, linked to provincial Villaruelism, in front of Radical, Peronist, Independent leaders, retirees, Malvinas veterans, and members of security forces.
Suarez sought to differentiate himself from the administration of Alfredo Cornejo and the Government of Javier Milei without proposing an immediate break with the political space that supports his municipal administration. He presented the governorship as a challenge that requires experience, management capacity, and broad agreements, and placed his trajectory in the capital as the basis of the provincial proposal.
Regarding the national economy, he acknowledged the macroeconomic stability valued by the markets, but he spoke of a dual reality. He contrasted the improvement of indicators linked to oil, gas, and mining with the unemployment and informality observed in everyday life. His point was that controlling inflation is not enough without a productive development program.
The mayor defended state investment in roads, water works, and electrical networks. He requested that the strategy not focus on the Greater Mendoza and include the Valle de Uco, the south, and the eastern part of the province. He mentioned the potential of Vaca Muerta, mining, tourism, industry, livestock, and demanded access to credit and lower tax pressure for the productive sectors.
Suarez also questioned the elimination of the cold zone tariff benefit and expressed concern about the Land Law. On the domestic front, he demanded that candidacies be decided in open primaries and not by decisions of national or provincial leaders. He proposed that the competition take place on a Sunday in June 2027 and that each candidate present their project to the public.
The intervention formally installs him in Cornejo's succession and adds a competitor to other names that are already moving in Mendoza. However, his request for PASO has not yet been accepted by the alliance nor defines the electoral mechanism. The expressed candidacy is a political decision by Suarez; its viability will depend on the internal rules, the agreements, and the support he manages to build until 2027.
