Tierra del Fuego's industry lost 2,757 jobs in the twelve months to May 2026. Registered employment across the main manufacturing sectors fell from 9,208 to 6,451 workers, a year-on-year contraction of 29.94%.
The decline affected electronics, plastics, garment manufacturing, textiles, fishing and other industrial activities. Job losses were accompanied by a broad reduction in production, although the scale varied significantly by sector.
Electronics recorded the greatest impact. In May it employed 4,900 workers, 2.1% fewer than in April and 33.1% below the level recorded a year earlier. Production reached 581,795 units, down 25.8% month on month and 29.9% year on year.
The garment sector produced 94,682 units, equivalent to 43,853 kilograms. Despite slight production improvements, employment fell to 126 workers, 3.8% fewer than the previous month and 48.4% below May 2025.
The fishing industry produced 295,553 kilograms, with declines of 12.2% from the previous month and 15.4% from a year earlier. Employment rose 3% compared with April to 205 workers, although it remained 2.4% below the previous year's level.
Plastics showed the most stable performance. Production reached 189,677 thousand units, down 1.1% from April but up 2.1% year on year. The sector employed 644 people, 0.5% fewer than the previous month and 2.1% more than a year earlier.
Textiles faced the sharpest production crisis. Output in May totalled only 15,244 linear metres, 52.2% below April and 92.1% lower than in the same month of 2025. The sector employed 194 people and recorded a 41.7% year-on-year decline in jobs.
