Vice Governor Alicia Mayoral began to appear in the internal debate of the Justicialist Party of La Pampa as a possible candidate for the Governorship in 2027. Her name is associated with the Línea Plural led by former Governor Carlos Verna, but so far there has been no personal launch or party resolution that formally places her in the competition.
Mayoral built her political career in General Pico and maintains a long-standing relationship with Vernismo. She was Secretary of Social Policy when Sergio Ziliotto served as Minister of Social Welfare, held a provincial deputy seat twice, and currently joins him in the executive branch formula as vice governor.
The possibility that PJ promotes a woman for the first time to govern the province adds political value to her eventual candidacy. The mayor of General Pico, Fernanda Alonso, who made her own aspirations public, is also mentioned. The appearance of more than one name shows that the provincial ruling party has not yet finalized its succession mechanism.
A particular element is the constitutional limitation on consecutive terms. According to the interpretation presented in the debate, if Mayoral were elected governor in 2027, she would complete her second consecutive term within the provincial executive formula and would not be able to run for immediate reelection in 2031. That condition could reduce tensions among leaders who are projecting the subsequent succession.
The hypothesis also allows for another reading: installing a figure well in advance can serve to gauge support, organize the internal process, or subject it to early wear. Surveys on their competitiveness were not released, nor was there a statement from Verna confirming the candidacy or a decision from Ziliotto. The relationship with Alonso and other aspirants also did not result in an internal meeting being called.
Mayoral is, therefore, a figure with institutional background and support within a relevant sector of Pampean Peronism, but remains an option under consideration. The decision will depend on the agreements of PJ, the governor's strategy, and the electoral rules that are adopted. Until those steps occur, it is not appropriate to present speculation as a proclaimed candidacy.
