Axel Kicillof has decided not to attend the event Ricardo Quintela will lead in La Rioja to mark the 50th anniversary of the murder of Bishop Enrique Angelelli and the Rioja martyrs. The Buenos Aires governor's absence avoids a photograph with Máximo Kirchner, who has confirmed he will attend. The decision carries weight in a Peronist dispute over leadership and the electoral strategy for 2027.
Buenos Aires province will still be represented. Cristina Álvarez Rodríguez, head of advisers to the provincial government, will travel on behalf of the Movimiento Derecho al Futuro. The arrangement gives Kicillof's group a place at the tribute while keeping the governor out of a show of party unity with the head of the provincial PJ and leading figure of La Cámpora.
Quintela conceived the gathering as broader than party structures. Leaders from different Peronist currents, social organisations, human-rights groups and religious representatives were invited. Angelelli's memory is the formal focus, but the meeting will also reveal which political actors are prepared to share the same stage.
Kicillof's absence comes as Peronism debates how to organise its national leadership. The MDF is building a federal network around the Buenos Aires governor, while La Cámpora retains Cristina and Máximo Kirchner as its references. In that setting, a joint photograph could have been read as a truce or an alignment that Kicillof's sector was not ready to signal.
Cristina Kirchner's legal situation adds another condition. The former president remains detained and permanently barred from public office after her conviction in the Vialidad case. Her defence has filed a petition with the UN Human Rights Committee to challenge the ruling and sustain the political possibility of regaining electoral eligibility.
Quintela's event will therefore display incomplete unity: Máximo Kirchner will attend, the MDF will send a senior representative and Kicillof will keep his personal distance. What matters next is how each sector interprets that arrangement after the tribute. The decision does not sever ties, but confirms that common photographs are themselves part of the negotiation over leadership and candidacies for 2027.
